  • Best. Headline. Ever.

Former French President Chirac hospitalised after mauling by his clinically depressed poodle.

Nod to Randy for the link.

  • This is frightening.

Marginal Revolution has a picture of a paper copy of the UAW’s contract with Ford.   It not that far off the size of the federal tax code.   It’s a visual clue to why the US auto is in so much trouble.  This is just more evidence that unions have more than served their purpose and it’s time for them to go quietly into the night, and the history books.

  • An interesting test of observation skills.

And if you’re anything like me, don’t worry.  There’s not going to be a loud scary screaming face at the end trying to startle you.  It’s a real observation test.

  • Colleges confront shootings with training

Hundreds of colleges across the nation have purchased a training program that teaches professors and students not to take campus threats lying down but to fight back with any "improvised weapon," from a backpack to a laptop computer.

    From this article:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26410431/

To that, I ask:  "Why not just let them carry real, effective self-defense weapons, instead of making them improvise weapons in the middle of an attack?"

That aside, I have to say that I'm hearted by the fact that it seems like the general population is, to some extent at least, starting to take tentative steps towards taking self-defense seriously.   Understanding that  capitulation and waiting for the calvary to show up isn't the only or the best option would be a pretty significant change to the "give them what they want and hope for the best" philosophy that we as a society have lived by for so long at such cost.  It may be a baby step, but I'd say that it's definitely a step in the right direction.

  • Nachos

Vegetarian nachos, anyway.   I don't know about you, but if I'm going to the time and the trouble to cook meat, I want to eat meat...Not sprinkle little bits of it over nachos.   Nachos with beans instead of meat, however, are both filling and can be prepared in 5 minutes.  Ten tops.

    Ingredients:

Tortilla chips - Enough to cover a dinner plate.  (I like Tostitos Restaurant-style for nachos.)
    Refried beans - 1/2 can
Tomato - Half a small tomato, chopped.
Onion - 1/3 of a medium sized onion, chopped.
Avocado - 1/4 of a large avocado, cut into slivers.
    Jalapeno - 1 jalapeno, chopped.
Cheddar & Jack cheese - 1/4 pound, (little more than a cup, maybe?) grated
Habanero cheddar - (About 3/4 of a cup?) finely grated.
Salsa to taste.   I like loads of salsa, and I like to mix the medium Sontava Organics salsa that I find at Costco with the super-hot D.L. Jardine's Habanero salsa.

Cover a plate with the chips, and dab on the refried beans until you have a good layer.  Then sprinkle the chopped tomato, onion, jalapeno, and the silvered avocado evenly over top.   Cover with a thin layer of the cheddar and jack, and then cover that with a thin layer of the habanero cheddar. Stick it in the microwave for a minute and a half to two minutes, or until the cheese starts to get melty.   Pull it out, cover it with the salsa, and then back in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds to warm the salsa, and finish melting the cheese.   Then, pull it out and enjoy!

  • Dark Knight

I saw Dark Knight yesterday, the second in the current iteration of Batman movies, the sequel to Batman Begins.   I only have one word for it.  Awesome.  Ok, two words.  Totally awesome.

  • Carry Permit Holders save lives.

Say Uncle has compiled a list of handgun carry permit holders who have interjected themselves into dangerous situation to save lives.   Doing my part to drain the BradyBunch's Google-juice on the term "carry permit holders" :-)
